1961 Italian Grand Prix

The Italian Grand Prix 1961 was held on 10 September in Monza and instead was the seventh race of the Formula 1 season 1961. In the history of this race was a disaster as the largest of the Formula 1 in the next Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips also 15 spectators were killed.

Background

Five weeks after the Grand Prix of Germany came to Formula 1 together on the traditional course of the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. In the meantime, not for the World Cup scoring Guard's Trophy at Brands Hatch, the Kanonloppet in Karlskoga, the Grand Prix of Denmark in Roskilde and the Grand Prix of Modena were held at the Modena Autodrome.

Ferrari driver Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips came with four points ahead of his teammate Phil Hill and twelve to Stirling Moss in Lotus Monza. With a win from trips already in the penultimate race of the season, the World Cup would have secured. The Constructors' World Championships had already won Ferrari.

At his first race Ricardo Rodríguez came into office, the fourth got the cockpit of the Scuderia Ferrari of Willy Mairesse. Rodríguez was the hitherto youngest Grand Prix driver. Only in 1980 went with Mike Thackwell a just one months younger riders at the start.

As a track version, the organizers determined the ten-kilometer combination of the Standard Course with attached oval course.

Training

After qualifying all works Ferraris were on the first four places. The pole position secured for the only time Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips. Ricardo Rodriguez missed his first Grand Prix start the pole by only 0.1 seconds.

Race

Immediately after the start of the race fell from trips from pole to sixth place back. Phil Hill took the lead from his team-mate Richie Ginther and Ricardo Rodríguez. In the second round, there was then input the Parabolic curve for Disaster: When overtaking collided von Trips ' Ferrari at nearly 230 km / h with the Lotus of Jim Clark. Von Trips lost control of his Ferrari, raced up the adjacent slope and hit the catch fence; both, both the slope and the fence, was the safety of the spectators. The car was thrown and hit the standing at the fence viewers. Von Trips was thrown from the cockpit, hit the ground and died instantly with him fifteen more people died, 60 were injured. The race was continued despite the terrible extent of the accident. Phil Hill won the race, his last Formula 1 victory, and secured the World Cup.
