1996–97 English Premiership (rugby union)

The 1996/1997 season of the English Premier League was the tenth season of the top flight of English rugby union championship. For sponsorship reasons it was called Courage League. It included 22 game days, each with a forward and reverse turn. The league title won for the second time the London Wasps. At the end of the season, West Hartlepool RFC and Orrell RUFC dismounted.

The season of second division ( National Division One) comprised 22 game days, each with a forward and reverse turn. The two top-ranked teams, the Richmond FC and the Newcastle Falcons, went directly to the Premiership. The third - and fourth-placed wore wore a play-off with the tithes and ninth- placed teams from the Premiership to the rise, but lost both. The Rugby Lions and the Nottingham RFC had to dismount in the National Division Two.
