The Grand Prix of Canada 2010 was held on 13 June at the Circuit Gilles -Villeneuve in Montreal and was the eighth race of the Formula 1 2010 season.

Background
After the Turkish Grand Prix Mark Webber led the drivers' championship with five points ahead of Jenson Button and nine points in front of Lewis Hamilton. McLaren -Mercedes resulted in the Constructors' Championship with a point ahead of Red Bull-Renault and 26 points ahead of Ferrari.
With Michael Schumacher ( seven times ), Fernando Alonso, Hamilton and Robert Kubica ( once each ) were four former winners of this Grand Prix.
Training
In the first free practice session Button posted the fastest lap time ahead of Schumacher and his McLaren team mate Hamilton. In the second free practice session, Sebastian Vettel put in front of Alonso and Nico Rosberg at the top of the field. In the third free practice Hamilton was the fastest rider ahead of Webber and Alonso.
Qualifying
In the first phase of qualifying Hamilton posted the fastest lap. The HRT, Virgin and Lotus pilots and Kamui Kobayashi retired from. In the second segment Hamilton retained the top position. The Toro Rosso and Williams drivers and Pedro de la Rosa, Vitaly Petrov and Schumacher dropped out. In the final phase of qualifying Hamilton scored another personal best and secured the pole position ahead of Webber and Vettel. This Red Bull Racing achieved for the first time this season, not the pole position.
At the end of qualifying, Hamilton caused a stir when he deliberately shuts off his car in the cool-down lap. McLaren had instructed his driver to this action because he had to save fuel in order to keep the required kilogram of fuel in the tank at the end. The race stewards penalized Hamilton for this action with a warning and a fine of 10,000 U.S. dollars.
Race
The Canadian Grand Prix was marked by different pit stop strategies. Off the top group, the Red Bull - Renault driver were the only ones who went on hard tires in the race. Hamilton decided to start for himself and kept the lead ahead of Vettel and Alonso. Felipe Massa collided with Vitantonio Liuzzi and de la Rosa had after a collision with Petrov to repair work on the box. All four pilots continued the race. This was not on Kobayashi to, first he collided at the Wall of Champions, beating his BMW Sauber front wing off and then had to give up entirely the race.
After Webber had passed in the fourth round to button Rosberg began a lap later with the regular pit stops. Since the soft tires were no longer intact in most pilots had the racers who were started on soft tires, and shortly thereafter all to the box. The Red Bull benefited and acquisitions led by Vettel the lead of the race. Hamilton lost a position to Alonso at the box. However, the hard tires did not last much longer, and so had to complete with hard tires their pit stops and the pilot. In the pit lane exit from Schumacher led to a contact with Kubica. Both were able to continue without damage.
While the Red Bull also completed their pit stop, a duel between Alonso and Hamilton developed. After Sébastien Buemi had taken over in the meantime, for the first time in his Formula 1 career leadership position, attacked Hamilton Alonso and overtook his former teammates. Since Buemi went to the pits, Hamilton took the lead so the race. After 13 laps, the race was for Bruno Senna, who had gearbox problems ended.
Hamilton could not settle by Alonso and Button, Vettel and Webber, which places three to five occupied, were in striking distance of the top group at the top. In lap 26 Alonso took the lead of the race. On the line before the pit lane he tried to overtake Hamilton but did not make an effort, as the British came to the pits. One lap later played in the same position from a dangerous situation between Kubica and Adrian Sutil. The two dueled and Kubica moved almost to Sutil past to come into the pits. One lap later, Sutil had a puncture on the box.
After two laps led and Alonso pitted and Webber took over as Vettel had already stopped, the lead of the race. Alonso came between Hamilton and Button back on track. Meanwhile, the race was over for de la Rosa after 30 rounds. He remained with engine failure before the Wall of Champions are available. At the top of Hamilton overtook continuously on Webber. Also Webber's real rival, his team-mate Vettel was able to close the gap. After Hamilton and Alonso Webber had overtaken Hamilton and was driven past him, Webber went to change tires on the box. He dropped it back behind his teammate.
After also Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock had to retire with technical problems, Button took over second place from Alonso. The McLaren driver had continuously caught up to the Ferrari driver, but could not pass. When Alonso was stopped while lapping of Karun Chandhok, Button took the opportunity for overtaking.
After Buemi had passed Schumacher, and Massa, who had overtaken some pilots in the race to pass by his former teammates tried, but urged the German Massa off a bit and Massa had to deal with a broken front wing to repair work on the box. As he was driving too fast in the pit lane at this pit stop, he received a 20 - second penalty after the race. At its result, however, this did not change.
After Kubica had scored the fastest lap of the race, Hamilton was the first across the finish line. Button made perfect with a second one-two finish for McLaren. Alonso was almost half a second ahead of Vettel and Webber third. The remaining points went to Rosberg, Kubica, Buemi, Liuzzi and Sutil. Schumacher, who had gone in ninth place in the final round, had to leave in the last lap of the two Force India to overtake and came outside the points in eleventh place.
In the world championship Hamilton took the lead from Webber, who finished third behind Button. In the Constructors' Championship, McLaren -Mercedes was able to extend his lead over Red Bull -Renault on with the double victory.
