Background
After the Chinese Grand Prix, Jenson Button led the Drivers' Championship with ten points ahead of Nico Rosberg and eleven points ahead of Fernando Alonso. McLaren -Mercedes resulted in the constructors' championship with 19 points ahead of Ferrari and 36 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault.
With Michael Schumacher ( six times ), Alonso, Felipe Massa and Button ( once each ) occur four former winners at this Grand Prix, which is the European season this season, at.
The Spanish Grand Prix was held in 2010 for a total of 40 times in the Formula 1 World Championship, which for the 20th time at the Circuit de Catalunya.
Training
In the first free practice session, Lewis Hamilton posted the fastest lap ahead of his teammate Button and Mercedes driver Schumacher. Christian Klien joined for the first time as HRT test driver in the first practice and was faster than regular driver Bruno Senna immediately. In the second practice session on Friday, Sebastian Vettel continued his team-mate Mark Webber to the top of the field. Schumacher was again third. In the third free practice session on Saturday morning Vettel retained the top position ahead of Webber. This time, Hamilton was third. The practice was briefly interrupted after spinning of Kamui Kobayashi and Vitaly Petrov. Both pilots were almost the same time in the same curve on the still wet curb and turned off the track. While Petrov bolide was slightly damaged, Kobayashi was able to drive to the end of the training back on track.
Qualifying
In the first phase of qualifying Webber set the fastest lap. The HRT, Virgin and Lotus drivers and Rubens Barrichello retired from. In the second section Webber kept the leadership position. The Force India and Toro Rosso drivers and Petrov, Hulkenberg and de la Rosa dropped out. In the final phase of qualifying Webber was again the fastest and thus secured his second pole position of the season. From second and third place Vettel and Hamilton entered the race.
Race
Lotus driver Heikki Kovalainen joined due to a gearbox problem not at the Spanish Grand Prix. At the start we came out on top in no position shift and Webber claimed the first position. Rosberg and Robert Kubica touched lightly and Rosberg came after he was off the track back. In the back of the pack Senna retired after four curves in the gravel from standing. Webber built the front a little ahead of his teammates, but the two Red Bull -Renault could not clearly separate from the rest of the field.
At the pit stops it came to the first shift. Schumacher, who was lying in sixth place behind Button before his stop was with an earlier stop and an overtaking maneuver on the start -finish straight to Button, who drove out from the pit lane, pass by. While Button lost one position, it ran for his teammates the other way. Although Hamilton came to Vettel into the pits, but the McLaren driver Vettel overtook at the pit lane exit. The peak position kept Webber, the guide did not have to leave temporarily due to a late stop.
While de la Rosa was forced to retire after 18 laps with a secondary damage after a tire sheep in the first round, Button tried to pass again and again to Schumacher, but was unsuccessful. In addition, Sébastien Buemi was fined for dangerous tripping out of the pit lane with a drive-through penalty.
Whilst overtaking it came in quick succession to two incidents Karun Chandhok to. First, Massa under braking while lapping and damaged a portion of his front wing. The Ferrari driver drove on the race without restriction. Then Chandhok had a second contact, as Jaime Alguersuari soon changed lanes after the rounding and Chandhok lost his front wing. The HRT driver had to finish the race then. Alguersuari was given a drive-through penalty for his maneuver.
Meanwhile, Webber continued to lead the race and extended his lead over Hamilton continuously. With little residue behind the McLaren - Mercedes driver Vettel was on the third place. Local hero Alonso, who drove an unspectacular race, followed them at some distance. In about 20 seconds behind Alonso Schumacher, Button and Massa followed.
After Buemi had given up with hydraulic problems, Vettel had twelve laps to go to another tire change to the box. He lost his third place while Alonso. But since he had enough of a lead to Schumacher, he just had to leave a place. Vettel also had brake problems, but stopped because of the large projection to the end of the race ahead of Schumacher.
After Hamilton had scored in the 59th round of the fastest lap of the race, he was second in the final round. Due to a defect in the left front wheel he came in the Renault curve off the track and had to abandon the race at the track barrier. Since he had completed enough laps, he was still ranked as 14th. Vitantonio Liuzzi also did not finish the race because he also turned out in the last round.
Webber eventually won his first race of the season ahead of Alonso and Vettel. It was a start- to-finish victory for the Australians. Schumacher defended his position the entire race and finished ahead of Button and Massa fourth. The remaining points went to Adrian Sutil, Kubica, Barrichello and Alguersuari.
In the World Cup ratings Button and McLaren Mercedes retained the top positions.
With Mark Webber for the fifth time in a row won another driver.
