Spring Training

From 24 February 2011, the pre-season of the MLB, the so-called spring training, in which the teams in the Grapefruit League and Cactus League new players tested, but could also upload their target original formations ran. The last game of Spring Training was held on March 30.

Best Team of the grapefruit League were the Minnesota Twins, who could win 62.5 % of their games. Simultaneously, the Twins also the second most successful team in the American League behind the Kansas City Royals, the Cactus League could decide for themselves with a 66.7 % win rate were owned it.

The best value of all the National League teams reached the previous year's winner of the World Series, San Francisco Giants, which were 65.7 % of games won second Cactus League.

Bottom of the Grapefruit League were the Houston Astros ( 31.4 %). At the end of the table, the Cactus League finished the Arizona Diamondbacks ( 32.4 %), the Spring Training.

Historically, the results of the two leagues in Spring Training are not a measure of success in the regular season. This was confirmed again in 2011, as Royals and Twins could play no role in the fight and the post-season, but conversely the Diamondbacks before the Giants the NL West decided for themselves.

Regular Season

Brief explanation gaming operations and table structure

The AL and the NL are each divided for the operation of gambling in three divisions. The assignment is based on regional criteria: East, Central and West Division. The game mode will run from 31 March 2011 until 28 September 2011.

The table placements are responsible for reaching the postseason: the three respective division winners and the best after winning percentage in two of the three divisions held in two rounds of the championship in the American or National League from. The respective champions then meet each other in the World Series.

The ranking of teams in the table above it during the season basically from the current ratio of wins to games overall as so-called Winning Percentage. The reason for this is the uneven distribution of games on the calendar, so that some teams have since played three or more games more than others. Thus, for example, the balance of a team A with 15 victories and 15 defeats ( .500 expressed as the corresponding percentage ) for exactly equivalent considered with the balance of a team B, which scored 16 victories and 16 defeats at the same time. For the final tables but this is irrelevant, since the end of season all the teams have played since 1961 usual 162 season games. Therefore, disclosure of victories and defeats ranges ( Draws are uncommon these days ).

By entering GB (Games Behind ) is documented, how late a tracker on the table is first. This is expressed, how many wins the tracker at the same time defeat the leader theoretically needed to achieve equal status. The specification is expressed precisely to 0.5 GB Games: If, for example, Team A 10 wins and 5 losses, Team B, however, 9 wins and 5 losses, a victory would already own ( without a loss of A) leading to table tie.

In order to develop during the season, at least to indicate the table positions of the teams in late April and late May were held. Another milestone was the All-Star break, the break in the play mode at the All -Star Game is; similar to the autumn championship in football is so middle of the season, an intermediate state determined. The last intermediate information is rather arbitrary, based on the date of 31 August to assess approximately four weeks before the end of the season to the extent to which each division was already decided in advance at this time (such as in all divisions of NL) or, where appropriate, at this time Leading was still repressed ( as happened in the AL East Division with the spectacular crash of the Boston Red Sox, the only seven victories achieved in 20 defeats).

Mode and participants

Play As in previous years in the post-season the top four teams to the respective winners of the American League and National League, which then in the World Series 2011 World Series winners determined.

Since September 30 and no later than 17 October 2011, the Division Series and then the respective Championship Series will be played. For this purpose, first take the three division winners and the best second (so-called wild-card ) will consist of two Division Series encounters in Best-of -Five mode ( ALDS or NLDS = American or National League Division Series). Then the winner of the Division Series encounters play in the best- of-seven procedures the respective League Champion ( ALCS and NLCS = American or National League Championship Series ).

The Wild Card winners usually play against the best division winner, so the team with the most wins in the regular season games. If the team with the most wins but come from the same division as the Wild Card winner, plays the wild card team against the second-best division winning their league, so as to avoid a division internal duel.

In the American League stood as a participant in the New York Yankees ( AL East winner ), Texas Rangers ( AL West winner ), Detroit Tigers ( AL Central winner ) and the Tampa Bay Rays ( Wild Card ) firmly. Because the rule described above, the Rays did not encounter the Yankees ( with the best record), but to the Rangers.

In the National League to qualified the Philadelphia Phillies ( NL East champion ), the Milwaukee Brewers ( NL Central champion ), the Arizona Diamondbacks (winner West ) and the St. Louis Cardinals ( wild card ) for the post-season.
