54th Berlin International Film Festival
The 54th International Film Festival Berlin took place until February 15, 2004 of 5.
Section competition
The festival was opened with the film Cold Mountain by Anthony Minghella. The film was within the competitive program, but outside of the competition. In the official competition for the Golden Bear and the Silver Bears in the following films presented this year the judgment of the international jury:
International Jury
The jury was led in 2004 by the American actress Frances McDormand as President. The other jury members were: Maji -da Abdi ( director of Ethiopia), Valeria Bruni Tedeschi (actress from Italy), Samira Makhmalbaf ( director from Iran ), Peter Rommel ( German film producer), Gabriele Salvatores (Director from Italy), Don Talbot ( American film producer and distributor )

Silver Bears in the following categories:
- Best Director: Kim Ki -duk
- Best Actress: Catalina Sandino Moreno in Maria Full of Grace and Charlize Theron in Monster
- Best Actor: Daniel Hendler in El abrazo partido
- Best Music: Banda Osiris for the film First Love
- For an outstanding artistic contribution to the team at dawn, directed by Björn Runge.

- The Agicoa - Price The Blue Angels for the best European film went to the film's director dawn, Björn Runge.
- Alfred Bauer Prize: The Alfred Bauer Prize went to the director of the best debut film Maria Full of Grace, Joshua Marston.
Panorama section
The following outstanding films were shown in the Panorama section 2004 program:
- What Love in Thoughts - Director: Achim von Borries - with Daniel Brühl and August Diehl in the lead roles
- I love my work ( bullying ) - Directed by Francesca Comencini - awarded the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury
- The Other Side of the Moon - Directed by Robert Lepage
- Wild Side - Director: Sébastien Lifshitz - awarded the " Teddy Award "
- Addicted to Acting - Director: Andres Veiel - won the Panorama Audience Award
- In the house opposite - Director: Marcos Bernstein with Fernanda Montenegro in the lead role - awarded the Prize of the International Association of Art Cinemas
Honorary Golden Bear
The Golden Ehrenbär for his life's work was the Argentine director Pino Solanas.
Children's Film Festival
On the Children's Film Festival the following films were awarded:
- Crystal Bear - awarded by the Children's Jury, comprising eleven children aged 11 to 14 years old from Berlin: Magnifico - Director: Maryo J. de los Reyes
- Honorable mention: The dud - Director: Bernd Sahling ( Dominique Horwitz )
Perspective German Cinema
In this section 13 German films were shown. By awarded by an independent German - French jury prize Dialogue en perspective in this category of film Flammend ' heart was excellent.
Retrospective
This year's retrospective was dedicated to the directors of the "New Hollywood." Under the title New Hollywood 1967-1976. Trouble in Wonderland were shown, among others, the following films:
