The road begins as a diversion of the A96 (Aberdeen - Inverness ) to the east of Nairn. It runs in a southeasterly direction through the sparsely populated lands of the region. In Littlemill the A939 crosses the Muckle Burn. Five kilometers south-east, the road reaches Belivat hole and then crosses the Findhorn. They reached the hamlet Ferness where the B9007 crosses. At the level of the lake Lochindorb, near the crossing of the Dorback Burn, opens out the A940 ( Forres - Dava ). In the area where the A939 forms the border between Highland and Moray.

A few kilometers south leads the A939 in the Cairngorms and crosses the lonely Dava Moor. About two kilometers north of Grantown -on-Spey under the road crosses a bridge of the former Highland Main Line, which since the construction of the shorter distance between Inverness and Aviemore only had more secondary importance, and in 1965 the Beeching Axe fell victim. One of the entrance gates and the former private breakpoint on the east of the A939 lying Castle Grant, formerly owned by Lord Strathspey, the Chief of the Clan Grant to form a common structure with the bridge. In this area, the road is often closed in winter due to snow drifts, the Ski Centre will change from Moray to Aberdeenshire.

Beyond the pass, the A939 again loses height quickly and reaches near Castle Corgarff the valley of the River Don, which is crossed twice within about a kilometer. Beyond Corgarff opens out the A944 ( Aberdeen Corgarff ). With the confluence of the course bends to the south, so a third time, the Don is crossed. The B976 leads one just beyond the crossing of the Gairn. The A939 ends after a total length of 96.6 km of the A93 (Perth - Aberdeen ) near the village of Bridge of Gairn.
