Abtsgmünd

Abtsgmuend is a town at the confluence of flax and cooker in Ostalb in eastern Baden- Württemberg. The large area municipality comprises the main town Abtsgmuend and the five sub- locations Neubronn, Laubach, Untergröningen, chief town and Pommertsweiler and some other villages and hamlets. The community is a nationally recognized resort in the Swabian- Franconian Forest.

Geographical location

Abtsgmuend has a share in the natural spaces Eastern Albvorland and the Swabian- Franconian Forest, both of which are part of the Swabian Keuper- Lias country. 71.6 km ² the community Abtsgmuend is behind the cities, the largest municipality in the Alb circle.

The main town Abtsgmuend lies at the mouth of the river Lein into the cooker. The Teilort Untergröningen located in two river bends to either side of the stove within 372 m above sea level. NN in the east of Baden- Württemberg.

History

Abtsgmuend was probably founded by Ellwangen from. His name has become the place of the confluence of the flax into the cooker and his membership in the monastery Ellwangen ( The Gemunden the abbot, in distinction to other Gemunden - places ). This Abtsgmuend is a high probability of ellwangische founding by the 7th century. An accurate time is not known.

The monastery Ellwangen laid the place to secure its forest area to the south east at. In a goods classification of the monastery Ellwangen from the year 1136 Abtsgmuend is mentioned by the name Gemunden. In the 13th century, the name was changed to avoid confusion with the later Abtzgemunde free imperial city to avoid Gmünd. The name first appeared in 1251 in a charter of King Conrad IV.

The late Romanesque ground floor of the tower of the parish church, which was built around 1200, shows that the settlement was already in existence before.

From Abtsgmuend from the castle Wöllstein was applied to secure the rule against the taverns of Limpurg. The owners changed frequently, but the suzerainty of the prince provost Ellwangen remained. To manage a bailiff was used, who was sitting in Wöllstein. In 1609 Heuchlingen, Abtsgmuend and Wöllstein formed the ellwangische Office Heuchlingen in the seat of the bailiff in Abtsgmuend.

By belonging to the prince provost Ellwangen Abtsgmuend remained in the Reformation era Catholic, while the Kochertal from Schwäbisch Hall to Untergröningen in 1544 reformed by the reformer Johannes Brenz and was Protestant.

In the 17th century founded the prince provosts iron works. In Abtsgmuend originated in 1611 in the Altschmiede a blast furnace and later a forge. She went under during the Thirty Years' War, but was built in 1667 as iron hammer again. 1699 the factory was moved from the district Altschmiede to Neuschmiede. With the secularization it passed into possession of Württemberg and later in the Swabian smelters Wasseralfingen on.

Incorporations

Abtsgmuend took 1911-1917 to a seal image that crossed diagonally in a divided shield on a local view of a Abtsstab and a sword showed that were covered by a small sign. The small plate showed the Württemberg deer antler. A continuous fallen rafter bar stood for the rivers Kocher and flax.

Attractions

The Catholic parish church of St. Michael Abtsgmuend is a neo-Gothic basilica with late Romanesque tower basement. Outside the church is erected since 1994 Rechenberg- cross; this dated to the year 1331 cross is the second oldest stone cross in Baden- Württemberg. It was probably created by a branch of the Counts von Rechenberg.
