Adapazarı

Adapazarı is a Turkish city in the Marmara region with 233 023 inhabitants. It is the provincial capital of the province of Sakarya.

History

Originally Adapazarı a small village, which lay at a branch of the river Sakarya and therefore after the Turkish Sultan Orhan I. 1324 revenue under simple Ada / آدا ( island) was called. It is first mentioned in a document of Orhan I. a Vakıf foundation. 1795 mentioned a document the village for the first time under the modern name Ada PAZARI / آدا پازارى (Island marketplace ) as the seat of government officials. In the year 1852/1853, the village was elevated to a city. By 1890 the city had 24,000 inhabitants in the census of 1950, the population had risen to 36 210.

Business, administration and infrastructure

Adapazari is located in one of the economically ascending regions of Turkey and benefits from the proximity to the large market of Istanbul and the ports in Izmit. Major industries are the textile industry, industrial suppliers and services. In addition, the city benefited from the fertile soils ( marsh soils ) in the area. In addition to agriculture, which is getting more into the background, the industry plays an increasingly important role. A majority of the population works in industrial production, including the Toyota car factory, the tire manufacturer Goodyear, in the express factory EUROTEM and truck factory Otokar. Furthermore, several large companies of Turkey, as the Toprak Holding, based in Adapazari. Technically low traffic Adapazari is located on the route between Istanbul and Ankara. Important railway lines and highways between the two cities run by Adapazari.

Earthquake

Adapazarı was due to the earthquake on 17 August 1999 international attention. The city center was destroyed to a very large extent, with several thousand people died. Adapazarı was like Gölcük and Izmit to the worst affected by the earthquake cities.

Others

Not far from the city is the late antique Sangariusbrücke with a considerable length of 429 m. For those seeking relaxation, the nearby lakes, including Sapanca and Poyraz Gölü are very popular and Karasu on the Black Sea. Keltepe (1610 m) is popular with hikers and skiers.

Sports

Adapazarı is home to the team Sakaryaspor. This one won the Turkish Football Cup and to date has played 11 seasons in the first Turkish league. Since the 2007/2008 season, the club is, however, up to the fourth Turkish league relegated due to structural problems and financial difficulties (as of 2014). Many former players like Tuncay Sanli National, Hakan Oğuz Çetin Şükür or were born in Adapzarı. Also the winner of the Supersport World Championship Kenan Sofuoglu is born in the city.
