Geography

Aitrang lies in the Allgäu region. There are the following districts: Aitrang, Huttenwang, Wenglingen. There is also the hamlets of binning, Görwangs, Krähberg, New Ried, Wolfholz, Münzenried and Umwangs and numerous wilderness farms. At the community foundation is also the Elbsee.

History

Even in a document of Frankish king Pepin the Short ( 741-768 ) of the place is mentioned. The place was Reichsvogtei of direct imperial monastery of St. Mang ( feet ), which held the low jurisdiction since 1227. The Reichsvogtei was repeatedly pledged and purchased the last of the prince pin Kempten 1524. The place was in the kingdom in 1803 at the Prince of Oettingen- Wallerstein. 1803 Before overlapped in this place the rights of the monastery of St. Mang and the prince of the pin Kempten. With the Act of Confederation in 1806 the place came to the Kingdom of Bavaria. In the course of administrative reform in Bavaria, was born with the congregation of 1818, the current community.

Train wreck of Aitrang

February 9, 1971 - On the way from Munich to Zurich went through the TEE 56 "Bavaria ", a diesel train RAm of the SBB, behind the train station Aitrang a right-hander with 130 km / h, although this was only approved for 80 km / h. The train derailed, destroyed the opposite track and a few cars plunged down an embankment. Shortly after the accident, was driving a coming from the opposite direction railcar into the accident site. In the accident 28 people were killed and 42 were injured. Because frozen water in the brake hoses blocked the line of the air brake, the engineer in the control car leading the TEE could stop only with the electric brake of the drive head at the end of the train.

Incorporations

At the municipal reform the independent municipality Huttenwang was amalgamated with the hamlets of New Ried, Umwangs and Wolfholz Aitrang on 1 May 1978. The hamlet was Wenglingen (previously in the community Ruderatshofen ) reclassified after a plebiscite on 1 January 1982 still.

In Aitrang a majority of the population is Catholic, a Protestant minority. The Church of St. Ulrich is the only church in the village, from which also takes the pastoral care of the district Huttenwang.
