Alvito is a city ( Vila ) in Portugal with 1278 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011). The county of Alvito is located in the northwest of the Baixo Alentejo at 38 km from Beja ( district capital ) with a total area of 265 km ² and 2523 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011). It is next to the town of Alvito nor the municipality of Vila Nova da Barony, which also belongs to this district.
About the limits of the Alentejo addition Alvito is known for its men's choirs, which perform the typical Alentejo songs without instrumental accompaniment, called Cante alentejano.
History and Sights
Alvito got city rights in 1280. The most important monument in the city is the castle, which was built in 1481 by the first Baron of Alvito, the building is located next to the Praça da Republica. The main church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção was built in the 13th century, and newly remodeled in the period 1480-1554. Inside there are frescoes found of great beauty. It is without doubt one of the most beautiful churches in the Alentejo, in which different styles of find ( Gothic, Baroque, Manueline ). Also noteworthy is the Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Candeias. This church was also built in the 13th century and in the 16th century as the seat of the Order of Santa Casa da Misericordia of Alvito. Inside the church rare tile paintings exist ( azulejos ) from the 17th century and a gilded altar.
