Arrondissement of Sélestat-Erstein

The district Sélestat - Erstein is an administrative district in the department of Bas- Rhin in Alsace region of France.

The administrative headquarters (French: chef- lieu) of the arrondissement is Sélestat (German: Schlettstadt ).

History

At the foundation of the department of Bas- Rhin on March 4, 1790 territory belonged to the " district Benfeld ". Later, the district Benfeld was renamed " district Schlestadt " which coincided essentially with the present arrondissement.

With the establishment of the arrondissements on February 17, 1800 was the new district Barr, which essentially replaced the district Schlestadt. On February 10, 1806 it became the district Schlestadt.

Since May 18, 1871, the area belonged to a circle Schlettstadt in the district of Bas-Rhin Alsace-Lorraine to the kingdom land. The group comprised 635 km ², and had then (1885 ) 71 378 inhabitants.

As part of the reintegration of Alsace to France on 28 June 1919 ( Treaty of Versailles), the arrondissements Erstein and Sélestat were re-cut. On 24 May 1974, it was merged to form the present-day district Sélestat - Erstein.

Geography

The district is bounded on the northwest and north by the arrondissement of Molsheim and Strasbourg- Campagne, Germany to the east with the government district of Freiburg (Baden- Württemberg), in the south of the arrondissement of Colmar and Ribeauvillé and to the west the district of Saint- Dié in the Vosges (Lorraine ).
