Astor is a census -designated place (CDP ) in Lake County in the U.S. state of Florida with 1,556 inhabitants ( 2010).
Geography
Astor is located on the west bank of the St. John River and about 45 km north of Tavares and about 90 km north of Orlando. The main part of Astor's is located in Lake County (Florida ) west of the St. Johns River. A small part of the village is located in Volusia County east of the river. The division of Stadtauf two counties ( Lake and Volusia ) leads to the remarkable fact that there are two different area code. Calls over the river are thus long-distance calls, while you lead a local call from Daytona to Astor. West on Astor borders the Ocala National Forest. A few kilometers downstream ( north ) is Lake George.
Astor is crossed by the Florida State Road 40, which is guided here by a bascule bridge over the river.
History
In the late 18th century, the city of William Backhouse Astor was sen. from New York, the name "Manhattan" baptized. Later it was renamed in memory of him " Astor ".
Demographics
According to the 2010 census, the then 1,556 inhabitants distributed to 1,084 households. The population density was 243.1 inh. / Km ². 88.0 % of the population were white, 0.1% African American and 1.8 % Native American. 8.2% were members of other ethnic groups and 1.9% in different ethnic groups. 15.7 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino.
In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 45.0 % of all households lived in 21.7 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 65.1 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.31 persons and the average family size is 2.78 people.
20.1% of the population were younger than 20 years, 15.4% were 20-39 years old, 28.0% were 40-59 years old and 36.6 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 52 years. 50.8 % of the population were male and 49.2% female.
The average annual income was $ 30,125, while 22.7 % of the population lived below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 92.41 % of the population spoke Spanish and 7.59%.
Economy
A significant industry, there is not. The main employment sectors are: wholesale: (15.5%), trade / retail ( 19.8 %), Arts, entertainment, food, restaurants ( 10.1%).
2003/2004 a golf course was created to promote tourism. Tourism is at present limited even on fishing and boating ( Boating and Fishing).
