Bavarian Alps
The term Bavarian Alps in the broader sense is located along the Bavarian or German territory Alps part. Bavaria is the only German state that part of the Alps has. Usually, however, only the area between the rivers Lech and Saalachstrasse in Germany mountainous parts are understood by the Bavarian Alps. Therefore, in this narrower sense does not include the Allgäu Alps, the Bavarian territory extends only since recently, and Berchtesgaden Alps to the Bavarian Alps.
The term is often used, but does not correspond to the developed of the German Alps mountain division clubs in the Eastern Alps. He is not to be confused with the term of the Bavarian Alps. The latter includes only the Bavarian Alps between the proportion of Loisach the west and the Inn in the East.
Mountainous parts and highest mountains
The Bavarian Alps in the wider sense include parts of the mountain ranges listed in the table below - in the initial overview sorted approximately from west to east and is indicated with maximum height in meters ( m) above mean sea level ( MSL ). The listed highest mountains and heights refer to the part of the mountain ranges lying in Bavaria, and not to the entire mountain range. So is the highest mountain in the Allgäu Alps, 2657 m above sea level. A. Large high Krottenkopf, in Tyrol and is therefore not included in the table.
The highest peak in the Bavarian Alps and Germany, the Zugspitze. It is located in the western part of the Wettersteingebirge and has a height of 2962 m above sea level. NN and two small glaciers high alpine nature (see high mountains).

Landscape
Like the Alps as a whole, as well as the Bavarian Alps were minted as part of the Northern Limestone Alps strongly by the last Ice Age. It originated Kare, lakes and the typical U-shaped valleys by glaciers. Deposits of glacial rivers, and especially the glaciers were in particular in the foothills a hilly landscape with lakes and bogs occur.
