Benalauría

Benalauría is a municipality in the province of Málaga in Spain.

Geographical Location

Benalauría lies in the valley of the River Genal, in the Serranía de Ronda in an altitude of 667m. Nearest large city is Ronda.

History

Unlike other villages of the Serrania de Ronda, the story Benaluarías can only lead back to the reign of the Moors. 715 AD founded the Berber tribe Ben Al Auría the place and gave him his name. From the time of the Moors, the first agricultural land, which can draw on the abundant water sources.

1485 Benalauría was recaptured during the Reconquista by the Christians. The revolt of the Moriscos in the Alpujarras and in the Serranía de Ronda in 1570 and their expulsion led to the depopulation Benalaurías, which was offset by the planned resettlement of Christians.

During the 18th century Benalauría experienced an economic upswing, which was mainly due to the local wine, cereals and olive growing.

Festivals

Benalauría is mainly through his hard Moros y Cristianos ( Moors and Christians ) famous, which will be performed every year on the first Sunday in August.
