Benjamin Ames

Benjamin Ames ( born October 30, 1778 in Andover, Massachusetts, † 28 September 1835 at Houlton, Maine ) was an American politician ( Democratic- Republican) and from 1821 to 1822, the third Governor of the State of Maine.

Early years

Benjamin Ames graduated from the Harvard University. After a subsequent law degree, he was admitted as a solicitor in 1806. Then he began a successful legal career. Between 1807 and 1811 he was district attorney in Lincoln County. Then he served until 1814 as a judge of a court of appeal.

Political career

After the founding of the state of Maine in 1820, he was a member and President of the House of Representatives of that State. After Governor William D. Williamson, who resigned on 5 December 1821 by his office to go to Congress, Ames had to finish his term in office. He was so according to William King and Williamson, the third incumbent in the first term of Governors of Maine. Three days before expiry of this time, Ames resigned from this post and Senate President Daniel Rose had to bridge the gap between the 2 and 5 January 1822. In 1827, Ames was again elected to the state legislature of Maine. He died on 28 September 1835.
