Joseph H. Williams

Joseph Hartwell Williams ( born June 2, 1814 Augusta, Maine; † July 19, 1896 ) was an American politician and from 1857 to 1858 governor of Maine.

Career

After primary school, Williams attended the Harvard University until 1830. He then studied at the Dane Law School in Cambridge Jura. Williams began his political career as a Democrat, but resigned in 1854 in the newly formed Republican Party over. In 1857 he was a member and President of the State Senate from even Maine. Due to the resignation of Governor Hannibal Hamlin on February 25, 1857, he had to quit as president of the Senate whose term as governor. Thus Joseph Williams was between 25 February 1857 to the January 6, 1858 Governor of Maine. Between 1864 and 1866, and again from 1873 to 1875 Williams was a member of the state parliament of Maine.

In 1879, he competed unsuccessfully for a return to the governorship. After he retired from politics and worked as a lawyer. Joseph Williams died in July 1896. He was married to Apphia Putnam. Together they had a child.
