The Westend station is located directly on the border with the eponymous district of Westend S -Bahn station in Berlin's Charlottenburg district of the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district. The entire station area was in 1877 - first as Charlottenburg- Westend - taken several steps in operation, is now, however, been reduced to a suburban rail and a remote pair of tracks. 1980, as a result of the empire workers strikes the temporary total closure of the installation. In 1993, a platform of the ring road was reopened for the S -Bahn traffic. A restore of the entire system is not provided.

Structure and history

The station complex is situated at the transfer of the Spandau dam on the circle line. Between the first large expansion in 1884 and the turn of the century, the complex was in its biggest ever expansion state with four platforms and multiple return tracks. The four platforms was in east-west direction indicated by the letters A through D, the first three were also connected to each other via a tunnel.

Both north and south of the platforms is now one parking and turning facility.

Reception building

The station building closes to the north of the former head station of the suburban trains, and has outputs for Spandauerdamm and train station forecourt to the east of the plant. It was designed in 1884 by the Office of the architects Kayser and Great Home. Built in Neo-Renaissance style building has no direct access to the platforms, passengers were either passed through the building on an open space east of the station and passed through a pedestrian tunnel to the platforms or they took the direct access from the Spandauerdamm to the individual platforms. Today is only the latter approach and exclusively to the ring platform in operation.

Platforms

The platform served as head A light rail station, the suburban services were still conducted in the early years of the distance on the circle line. The tracks ended blunt on the platform at the north joined the reception building. The platform was not electrified in 1928 and from then on no longer needed. After 1945 he was removed. On the site there is now a footpath.

The platform B served the trains Lehrterstraße and light rail, the more wrong on the ring road behind Westend. From the south there was the possibility, in addition to approach the platform, same opportunity presented itself for the light rail trains that did not stop at the station A for the ring rail trains. Behind the station led the B- track continues on the tracks Lehrterstraße mainline. After the electrification of routes in 1928, the track pair Lehrterstraße route was no longer needed and used by the light rail trains partly. Ring and light rail used henceforth together the platform B, and its western neighbors platform. Behind it was erected a two-pronged reversing facility, which was necessary for the electric urban trains, they should not continue to the northern ring. Around 1944 the road ended at the platform, since the compound curve of the city to the northern ring road was shut down and was present before Westend no changes of track between two paths. To date, the platform remains, however, is neglected and can no longer be used due to the now wider width of the adjacent platform. The roofs of the station platforms A and B possessed a massive steel columns row number.

The platform C of the circle line is the only one of the four platforms, which is still in operation today. It was created along with the other platforms when converting in 1884 and is something designed wider than the neighboring city platform. The structure of the platform and its subsequent trackage remained until the reopening in 1993 about the same. Since then, the platform has been widened considerably, so that the trains towards Jungfernheide now adjacent to both the C and B platform. In contrast to the other two suburban train platforms is the roof of the platform from a two- lined row of columns, as is customary for the Berlin railway stations of the turn of the century. About two lifts the platform is barrier-free. In the coming years, the construction of an additional access at the southern end of the platform in the direction of Sophie- Charlotte Street is planned.

The platform D was due to the mainline tracks of the track and served as a terminus for the trains that were run by the Wetzlar train coming on the circle line. However, since 1882 a direct link is created by the Wetzlar train to the city, the platform never gained great importance. Even before the turn of the century it was closed and demolished shortly afterwards.
