Bogorodsk, Bogorodsky District, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast

Bogorodsk (Russian Богородск ) is a city in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast in Russia. It has 35 499 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) and is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons. Bogorodsk is located about 43 km south-west of Nizhny Novgorod.

History

Bogorodsk exists since 1570th Its origin, the place has about 300 due at Ivan the Terrible fallen into disfavor settlers from Nizhny Novgorod, who had been banished from him there. Initially called the village Bogorodizkoje or Bogoroditschnoje derived from Bogorodiza ( = Mother of God ). Later evolved in place the leather processing, from the 17th century were added more crafts. The city status was given Bogorodsk but not until 1923.

Economy and infrastructure

The leather craft has survived until today in Bogorodsk; in total there are in the town four factories for leather processing, further shoe, textile and building material factories.

The town has a station on the railway from Murom to Nizhny Novgorod.
