Vetluga

Vetluga (Russian Ветлуга ) is a small town in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast (Russia) with 8954 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 230 km northeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Nizhny Novgorod on the right bank of the same name Vetluga, a left tributary of the Volga.

Vetluga is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The place was first mentioned in 1636 as a village Schulepnikowo documented. In the 18th century the wooden Church of the Resurrection (Russian: Tserkov Woskressenija ) was built and the village according Werchneje Woskressenije called ( werchneje for upper, because further down the river was another village of that name, now urban-type settlement and Rajonverwaltungszentrum Woskressenskoje ).

On September 5, 1778 municipal law as an administrative center of a circle ( Ujesds ) was first awarded the governorship of Kostroma while renaming the name of the river.

The city has long been the most important commercial center of the tract of land around the middle reaches of the Vetluga ( Wetluschski krai).

The city has a museum of local history.

Economy and infrastructure

In Vetluga there are companies in the timber industry and the food and textile industry.

The nearest train station is just 50 kilometers south Uren at the Moscow- Nizhny Novgorod -Kirov. By Vetluga the road R157 Uren - Scharja - Nikolsk - Veliky leads Ustjug - Kotlas.
