Semyonov, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast

Semyonov (Russian Семёнов ) is a town in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast (Russia) with 24,473 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the Volga Vetluga lowlands about 70 km northeast of Oblasthauptstadt Nizhny Novgorod at the Sanochta, a right tributary of the opening into the Volga Kerschenez.

Semyonov is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The place in the first half of the 17th century as a settlement of Old Believers. In 1644 he was first mentioned in documents as Semjonowskoje, 1717 Kirchdorf Semyonovo.

1779 was the place the municipal law as an administrative center of a circle ( Ujesds ) under the name Semenov.

Until the October Revolution, the city is one of the most important centers of Altorthodoxie remained.

Since the 17th century in the area around the north- westernmost village Khokhloma was the famous handicrafts of Khokhloma painting ( Chochlomskaja Rospis ) spread with golden and red plants, but also animal motifs on a black background on wooden utensils such as spoons, bowls and pitchers. Culture and sights

Semyonov has since 1934 a museum of folk art products, today under the name Semjonower Historical and Art Museum.

East of the lake lies Swetlojar Semyonov, on the ground the mythical city of Kitezh should be sunk.

Economy and infrastructure

The Khokhloma folk art products play a central role in the economy of the city Semyonov today. In addition, there are farms instrument engineering and woodworking industries.

The city lies on the opened on this section 1927 railway Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod -Kirov ( kilometer 511), on the upside today, much of the features of the Trans-Siberian railway on its western part from Moscow. By Semyonov also leads the R159 road Nizhny Novgorod - Yaransk.
