Gorbatov (town)

Gorbatov (Russian Горбатов ) is a small town in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast (Russia) with 2278 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 60 km southwest of Oblasthauptstadt Nizhny Novgorod on the right bank of the Oka, a right tributary of the Volga.

Gorbatov belongs to Rajon Pavlovo and is one of the smallest cities in Russia.

History

In a document of the year 1565 the village was mentioned Meschtschorskaja Porosl the Terrible to the boyars Alexander Gorbaty - Schuiski in connection with (former) donations of lands by Ivan. Later the place Meschtschorskaja Sloboda was named and renamed in 1672 after the nickname of the previous owner in Gorbatowo.

1779 the municipal law as an administrative center of a circle ( Ujesds ) was awarded under the name Gorbatov.

By the end of the 19th century the production of hemp ropes was in several smaller roperies the city 's most important economic sector.
