Zavolzhye, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast

Sawolschje (Russian Заволжье ) is a town in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast (Russia) with 40,460 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 60 km northwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Nizhny Novgorod on the right bank of the Volga River, opposite the city Gorodez. Immediately above the town is the 13 km long dam on the Gorkier reservoir. Sawolschje is not to be confused with the city Sawolschsk in the neighboring Ivanovo.

Sawolschje belongs to Rajon Gorodez.

The city is located is the end of a 58 -kilometer-long railway line from Nizhny Novgorod.

History

In connection with the construction of the dam of the reservoir on the Volga Gorkier the village Pestovo was on the right bank to one of the construction workers settlements. Since these across the river was (Russian sa Wolgoi ) from the old town Gorodez view behind the Volga, it received the name Sawolschsk, although otherwise the area to the left, ie east of the Volga as Sawolschje, (country ) is called after the Volga.

1964, the city charter was granted.

Education

In Sawolschje is a branch of the Technical University of Nizhny Novgorod.

Economy

Sawolschje is significant location of mechanical and vehicle engineering. Here there is a large diesel engine plant ( Sawolschski Motorny Zavod ), inter alia, a supplier to the automotive plant Gorkier (GAS) in Nizhny Novgorod, a work for crawler tractors and other machinery factories and enterprises of the construction industry.
