History

The city was founded in the 7th century BC under the name Bovianum. As the capital city of the Samnites, she played a role in the Samnite wars and in the Social War, until it was conquered by Sulla.

In the time of the Triumvirate and under Vespasian colonists were settled in it under the new name Bovianum Undecumanorum.

The city was destroyed during a long series of earthquakes, the last in 1913.
