Bondo District

The Bondo District is a district in the Nyanza Province in Kenya. The capital of the district is Bondo. The district borders Lake Victoria and on the west by Uganda. Until 1998, the area belonged to Siaya District. Bondo District is divided into five divisions: Maranda, Nyang'oma, Rarieda, Madiany and Usigu.

Economy

Most people in Bondo District live from agriculture, livestock and fisheries. The area of ​​the Bondo District actually comprises 1972 km ², of which 1000 km ² water surface on Lake Victoria. 70.6 % of people lived below the poverty line in 2007. Bondo District is considered therefore as one of the poorest districts in Kenya.

Crops are cotton, millet, sorghum, beans, maize, cassava and potatoes. Livestock farming focuses on dairy cows and zebu, sheep, goats and poultry.

The fishermen catch mainly Nile perch, Tilapiini and Rastrineobola argentea. In 2007 there were ten aquaculture enterprises with 18 fish ponds.

Tourism

In the district there are five hotels, all located in the capital of Bondo. There mainly are seminars and workshops, tourism is not very pronounced. Flora and Fauna
