Brescello

Brescello is a village with 5554 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Reggio Emilia in Emilia -Romagna.

It lies on the banks of the Po, about the middle of the triangle, which is bordered by the cities of Parma, Modena and Mantua. International reputation and reached the place as the scene of five filmed 1951-1965 stories about Don Camillo, based on the novels by Giovannino Guareschi. The place was chosen by the director against the wishes of Guareschi, who would have preferred his birthplace Fontanelle ( di Rocca Bianca ).

History

The first settlers were demonstrably sedentary Cimbric Gauls, the ( Romanized ) Brixellum gave their settlement the name. However, some archaeological finds date back to prehistoric times. In around 200 BC it was conquered by the Romans as a colony and incorporated into the empire. As a result, the city developed into a thriving commercial and business center, but also had strategic importance, since one could monitor from here the traffic on the Po. In the Four Emperors in 69 AD Otho had in Brixellum his headquarters there and committed suicide. The decline of the Western Roman Empire also led to the decline of Brixellum until it was raised in the year 389 a bishopric. Towards the end of the 6th century, the city was razed by devastating floods to the ground and heard for more than 500 years to exist.

In the 12th century Brescello was rebuilt and was dependent on the sequence of Parma, to Spanish troops in 1704 destroyed the city again. What was left of the once thriving city in 1861, merged with other cities in the Kingdom of Italy in Reggio Emilia.

Personalities

Brescello is the birthplace of the philosopher and humanist Mario Nizolio (1498-1576) and the librarian Antonio Panizzi (1797-1879), who headed the library of the British Museum from 1856 to 1867.

Tourism

Brescello is visited by about 50,000 tourists. There is a " Museo de Peppone e Don Camillo ". Before the town hall are bronze statues of the two.
