Budyonnovsk

Budjonnowsk (Russian Будённовск ) is a town with 64 624 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in southern Russia in the Stavropol region.

Geography

Budjonnowsk is located in the foothills of the Caucasus on the river Kuma, 220 km south-east of the regional capital Stavropol. Nearest city with 45 km, is Selenokumsk.

History

From the 13th to the 16th century existed in place of the present-day village the Tatar -Mongolian city Madschar (Russian Маджар, Tatar Маҗар ) on the trade route from Asia to Europe, whose heyday ended with the destruction by Tamerlane in 1395. It also older settlement remains have been found that date back to the 2nd century. Since the 19th century there are unconfirmed hypotheses that this settlement with the Khazar Khaganate and - bring the Magyars ( Hungarians ) in conjunction, especially since some Magyar tribes actually nomadisierten in the first centuries after Christ, in the Northern Caucasus foothills - because of the name.

From 1935 to 1957, again from 1973, she was named Budjonnowsk, named after Semyon Budjonny ( 1883-1973 ), a Marshal of the Soviet Union and Hero of Soviet Union.

In the international headlines, the city came in June 1995. When a hostage by Chechen terrorists under Shamil Basayev in the hospital of Budjonnowsk 150 people died.

Budjonnowsk is the center of the chemical industry and an extensive food industry, garment industry also exists. Around the city there are petroleum, natural gas and clay deposits.

Education

Budjonnowsk is home to several colleges for agriculture and viticulture, and there is also a branch of the University of Stavropol.

Culture

The city has a museum of local history. Also worth seeing is the historic station building.
