History

After first taking care of in the 1950s with the GDR only slowly increasing motorization to the expansion and maintenance of rural roads, all necessary measures should be initiated according to a 1958 written letter from the SED leadership to the with the expansion to start the motorway network in the GDR. Among other things, it was about a project to in the district of Rostock. In the People's Chamber Walter Ulbricht was done from a highway on which working people could go to the Baltic Sea in the autumn of 1959. In 1961 the plans were suddenly put on hold. Several years existed an isolated single lane finished section in the northeast of Rostock between the highway 105 (now Federal Street ) and the seaport.

However, economic recovery and increased traffic loads made the late 1960s a resumption of the project necessary. Construction began in 1970, the work was carried out from the VEB Kombinat highway construction. With the change of power at the top of the SED mainly of housing was stepped up in the GDR. The site of the abbey A 19 should be set. In negotiations with Günter Mittag was achieved at least a slower continued construction. After eight years of construction, the last section of the highway Berlin -Rostock in 1978 was finally opened to traffic. After the fall of the carriageway of the A19 was gradually repaired and equipped with emergency lanes and parking facilities.

Specifically, the following shares were made:

The dedication as highway has been amended several times in the area of Rostock after 1990: Connecting points in the area of international port then ceased to qualify as a motorway. With the completion of the Warnow Tunnel, the original course of the highway was then changed again: Originally led them across today's " road to the seaport " there directly.
