The 1724 meter long Heidkopftunnel (named "Tunnel of German Unity ") is the longest tunnel in the route and crosses the border between the states of Thuringia and Lower Saxony. The BAB 38 runs south of Leipzig about 10 km above ground excavated by two former lignite mines, which required special security measures included in its subsoil.

The BAB 38 forms at Leipzig the southern bypass of the city. Thus it represents not only an east -west connection, but also a driveway in the city of Leipzig. The amusement park " Belantis " got its own motorway exit ( "Leipzig New Harth ").

The Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003, the cost of building the highway with 1.0 billion euros were given. For the state of Saxony -Anhalt, the construction cost 279 million, 257 million for Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony 373 million should be 93 million euros.

The A 38 is bound as a " German Unity Transport Project " a special law to speed up the planning. The design and construction were accompanied mainly in Lower Saxony section of civic protests. The noise of hamlets of Friedland, in the district of Göttingen in this region leads to an apparent rejection of the highway. In contrast, the motorway in northern Thuringia and Saxony- Anhalt and Saxony is linked to high expectations regarding traffic performance, accessibility and new industrial settlements.

Largely parallel runs the Halle- Kassel Railway, which was also developed as German Unity Transport Project.

The section between Göttingen and Halle wore during the preliminary planning the unofficial working title Autobahn 82, the section south of Halle and Leipzig QUALIFICATION Federal Highway 140
