The Federal Highway 61 (abbreviated as BAB 61) - Short form: Highway 61 ( Abbreviation: A 61 ) - operates over a total length of 320 kilometers from the Dutch border at Venlo motorway junction Hockenheim, where it joins the A6. She runs through the cities of Viersen, Mönchengladbach, Bedburg, Bergheim, Kerpen and Erftstadt by Eifel, Hunsrück and Rheinhessen more about Ludwigshafen and Speyer. Be affected thereby, the metropolitan areas of Cologne, Bonn, Koblenz, Bingen, Mainz, Bad Kreuznach, Alzey, Worms and Rhine- Neckar region.

Background

The A61 was until the construction of the A20 is the longest of the " double-digit " highways in Germany and represents the westernmost German motorway connection from the Netherlands and Belgium to the south German motorway network Represent while avoiding the most heavily loaded Cologne Ring. Accordingly, this highway is heavily frequented by Dutch lorries and tourists. For this reason, the BAB was connected to the Dutch " Autosnelweg " system. Construction began in December 2009. The clasp to Venlo was officially released in April 2012 for traffic. The route goes from Kaldenkirchen, south of the existing route across the border into the Netherlands, where it becomes the A74. For the 3-km long network circuit has been estimated including land acquisition cost a total of around 60 million euros. Five million euros were taken away in accordance with state contract by the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Except for the last about ten kilometers for Hockenheim A passes 61 on the left side of the Rhine, and is therefore also referred to as the " left bank highway ". Between Erftstadt and Bad Neuenahr she uses the former Strategic embankment.

History

The route was planned in connection with the present Federal Highway 57 since the 50s of the 20th century. The now called the A61 south part Bonn has long been run as a four-lane national highway under the name Federal Highway 400. From 1967, the plans ran under the highway number A 14, which also still since 1975 so designated motorway A 57 and located between Köln-Nord and Autobahndreieck Erfttal part of today's Federal Highway 1 included, which as far south today at the chainage of the A61 of the motorway junction Bliesheim can be read. The A Last gaps of Bedburg to Kerpen- Türnich was opened to traffic in sections 61 1971-1975. Was closed until 1987. There, the BAB roughly follows the course of the previous Erft valley road, which was built in stages from 1956 and 1975, partly included in the course of the A61. The Mosel is crossed with the help of Moseltalbrücke.

The A61 is currently primarily four lanes. A few sections are expanded six lanes, for example, between the motorway junction Mönchengladbach- Wanlo and the interchange Jackerath, and the distance between the motorway junction Erfttal in Erftstadt and the Bliesheimer Cross ( the section is also identical to the A 1 and therefore characterized by a high volume of traffic ). The Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan of the full six-lane extension of the A 61 is provided as an additional requirement. Some uphill stretches in the Eifel and Hunsrück are unilaterally expanded dreistreifig, sometimes only the hard shoulder has been released as a lane.

The section Wanlo - Jackerath was extended to September 2005, six lanes to accommodate the traffic of the A44, which was interrupted because of the open pit Garzweiler II. The expansion was funded by the RWE subsidiary Rhein Braun. After 2017Vorlage: Future / In 3 years the A 61 is demolished in this section, as the mining progresses further to the northwest. Instead, by then the A 44 is restored, then what the traffic of A is 61 passed.

Between Erftstadt and the motorway interchange Bad Neuenahr- Ahrweiler, the motorway is related to the path of a non- completed strategic railway line. Between Bad Neuenahr and the motorway junction Meckenheim the A was 61-1973 converted to a highway airstrip so that she could act as a takeoff and landing strip for aircraft in times of crisis, the high-ranking members of the government should bring in the Ahr valley to the government bunker.

In road repair works in Gau- Bickelheim a pilot project in 2009 was tested in construction routes to keep traffic flow. Herein, the reduced construction speed limit of 60 km / h on the usual construction speed limit of 80 km / h was increased, but at the same time introduced a ban on overtaking and drive a new construction site sign with the label Puts! positioned.

Since 4 April 2012, the A is 61 traced out by the Kaldenkirchen exit from and expanded to include an exit to the emerging industrial park venete and to the Dutch motorway network ( Rijksweg 74) connected directly.

There are plans to expand the A 61 to six lanes from the border to the Netherlands to the border to Rhineland- Palatinate.
