The Canon EOS 300D ( marketed in the U.S. as: Digital Rebel, Japan: Digital Kiss) is a digital Single Lens Reflex ( SLR) camera from Canon. It is equipped with a 6.3 - megapixel CMOS sensor in APS -C format.

General

The EOS 300D came in the fall of 2003 to the market. At that time other digital SLR were available from almost 2000 euros. With a price of around 1100 euros to launch (without lens), the EOS 300D was a price cutter and became a huge sales success in the amateur market. Production stopped in 2005. The successor of the EOS 300D was the EOS 350D.

The Canon EOS 300D should not be confused with the Canon EOS 300, in which it is a produced between 1999 and 2002 for small format film SLR camera.

Technology

The dimensions of the camera body are at 142 mm × 99 mm × 73 mm (W × H × D), weight without battery and storage media (Compact Flash) at around 560 grams. This makes it one of the lightest in its class. Due to its design, the camera is suitable to use the standard EOS accessories. The camera is compatible with more than fifty standard lenses. The camera has a crop factor of 1.6.

Images are created with a maximum resolution of 3072 × 2048 pixels. The JPEG format images with a color depth of 24 bits are stored in the raw data format (RAW) with a color depth of 36 bit. In each RAW file is a JPEG file of medium quality is integrated, which can be extracted via an associated program. A simultaneous storage of RAW and JPEG images in two files is not possible.

The camera can be set to the ISO values 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1600.

The images are mapped to a sensor area of 22.7 × 15.1 mm. In addition to the exposure modes Program AE, aperture priority, shutter priority and manual exposure, there are predefined programs such as Full Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Close-up (macro ), Sports and Night Scene.

The camera offers a shutter speed of 1/4000th to 30 seconds; in addition also a Long Time Exposure ( Bulb ) is available. The camera was also sold as a kit with a lens EF -S 18 -55mm f / 3,5-5,6 Canon.

On the back of the camera body, there are two liquid crystal display panels. The top panel is used to display the image counter and various recording parameters. Below is a color display with a size of 1.8 " and a resolution of 118,000 pixels. As this is inherently common in most digital SLR cameras, the back display offers no preview on the subject; the framing is selected on the viewfinder while the display is used to check the images captured. In this case, a check of the focus through a magnifying glass function is possible.

A built-in acceleration sensor detects how you hold the camera: This can made in portrait shots are automatically rotated correctly with the appropriate software.

Criticism

Criticism has been leveled at the not very high quality acting plastic housing and the comparatively small and dark viewfinder image. It has been criticized that the camera lacked many features (eg no direct way of selection of the exposure measurement procedure and the autofocus mode, no flash exposure compensation, no mirror lock-up, low burst speed ). The image quality was not commonly criticized. Some functions could be activated by downloading an unofficial firmware. In addition, it can not be connected directly to a photo printer.

In addition, an alleged lack of support under Windows Vista and Windows 7 is often criticized. In fact, the camera with the default settings via USB is not recognized. However, be remedied by changing the connection settings from "Normal " to " PTP " (in the camera menu 2).

Unofficial firmware

The technique of the 300D is almost identical to the more expensive EOS 10D. There are differences in some controls: While the 300D has a directional pad, used the 10D a rotating wheel. The original firmware of the two camera models is very similar, with some functions by the manufacturer were software- locked in the 300D firmware. A Russian programmer using the pseudonym Wasia changed the firmware, so that now the following additional functions are available:

  • Ability to lock the shutter at no memory card is inserted
  • Manual control of auto focus modes ( switching to Single AF or Continuous AF is possible)
  • Flash Control
  • Individual features such as mirror lockup ( mirror lockup ) are activated
  • Burst is expanded
  • File size embedded in the RAW file JPEG file in parallel storage is controllable

Not all of the usable functions in the 10D are available. The deliberately suppressed by Canon functionality can, however, be so greatly expanded. The modified firmware ( Version 1.1.1 ) can be downloaded from the Internet and can be installed via a CompactFlash card in the camera, without the need for the camera must be opened. It should be noted that guarantee and warranty claims by uploading the unauthorized firmware expire.
