Geography

The Middle Ore Mountains is characterized by eastward increasingly broad ridge plateaus. In the west the Fichtelbergbahn Wedge Mountain massif sits on and dominated the plateau of more than 200 m. The Northern Slope of the mountain reaches 45 km wide, its greatest extent.

Gneisses have high proportion of the geological substratum. Local features include ceiling remnants of the Tertiary Basaltvulkanismus as is found for example in the bear stone.

Compared to Westerzgebirge precipitation levels are lower, but although there are significant small spatial differentiation by local Lee and Luvgebiete. The comb plateaus are vermoort in certain areas, the largest bog area is 124 ha, the " Mothäuser Heide".

To the north, the gently undulating Erzgebirgsbecken connects with the city of Chemnitz, while the mountains to the south continues across the border to the Czech Republic. The state border largely follows the crest of the mountain. The Fichtelbergbahn, (1,214 m above sea level. NN ) north of Upper Wiesenthal, is the highest mountain in Saxony. The wedge mountain about 3.8 kilometers south of the Fichtel lying on the Czech side ( tschech. Klínovec, 1244 m above sea level. NN ) is the highest mountain of the Erzgebirge.
