Life

Charles Emmanuel was born the only son of Emanuel Philibert of Savoy and his wife Marguerite of France. He tried to take advantage of the geo-strategically favorable situation in his country between France and the Spanish controlled northern Italy to increase his country and increase its prestige. First, he leaned on to Spain and operational policy towards France. This failed when he was forced by France in the Treaty of Lyon in 1601 to cede for the required Margraviate of Saluzzo far more important own territories to France. The reconquest of Geneva, that had formerly belonged to Savoy, he failed in 1602 in the Escalade. Frustrated with the lack of support he then turned to Spain from and formed an alliance with France.

1626 the dukes of Mantua died out on its possession Monferrat Charles Emmanuel could raise claims. France unsupported claims of Savoy. That's why Karl Emanuel intervened in the Mantuan War of Succession, which was associated with a re- turn to France. He died in 1630 during the war, the only his son Victor Amadeus was able to finish with the peace of Cherasco.

With his numerous children, Charles Emmanuel Marriage operational policy. At one of his goals was going to win the cardinal's hat for his family. The family already had a Cardinal, as the antipope Felix V. was compensated as much for his resignation as such in the 15th century. This tradition he wanted to go back. Pope Clement VIII in 1589 he hit his first, then only two years, son of Victor Amadeus before and then his fourth- born son Maurizio di Savoia. By sending a Cardinal of Savoy to the Curia the close ties with Rome should be ensured. In addition, it is the Savoy family would be equal with the royal houses of Gonzaga d' Este, Medici and Farnese, who also had cardinals in their family at this time. Only under Paul V. his efforts were successful. 1607 the Pope appointed Maurice of Savoy cardinal.
