CNID Footballer of the Year

The award Footballer of the Year of Portugal was first awarded in 1970 by the Lisbon daily newspaper Diário Popular.

The first winner was the legendary Eusébio, who was elected in 1965 European Footballer of the Year. Befell him this honor again in 1973, shortly before the end of his career. Nowadays, Luís Figo holds the record with six awards, followed by António Oliveira and João Pinto with three prices. 15 players were at the time of award to FC Porto, 14 players were under contract at Benfica. The Brazilian Mário Jardel excellent 2002 was the first foreigner to the bestowed this honor.

Since 2001, only players still be considered by Portuguese clubs. Since 2006 there is a separate award for Portuguese players in foreign clubs.

The prize is awarded by CNID since 2006. Was five times and so the most frequently honored as the best Portuguese player of the year abroad Cristiano Ronaldo.
