Contender (dinghy)

The Contender is a single-handed trapeze dinghy. The Contender was designed in 1967 as a potential Olympic dinghy by Ben Lexcen. 1968 got the Contender international status and is sailed in more than 12 countries in the classroom. Although the Contender had won the 1965-1968 selection races to follow Finn dinghy as an Olympic dinghy, the class remained the Olympic status denied. As a final failure of the nomination of the laser can be considered a second -handed Olympic class for men in addition to the Finn dinghy in 1992.

By 2011, more than 2500 Contender were built.

The Contender can be sailed by sailors of different body sizes and weights. The weight of successful sailors is between about 55 kg and 105 kg at a height of about 165 cm to 200 cm. The age of the sailors is between 16 and 60 years.

The Contender can be just as good sailed on Inland waters such as lakes as on the open sea.

Championships

In the International Contender Class World Championships are held every year. Usually held every two years instead of a World Cup in Europe, about each other's years, the associations communicate in North America and Australia.

European Championships are held every two years at such a pace that in Europe every year a large international competition will be hosted.

Record-breaking champion Andrea Bonezzi from Italy with seven title wins. England has reached 13 world titles, Australia comes on ten world championships. Italy has recorded eight wins, five New Zealand, Germany and Denmark, two, one the United States. The British are so far provided eight different Contender World Champion, Australia five, Italy, Germany, Denmark and New Zealand, two, one the United States.

Medemblik on the IJsselmeer, with five World Cups the most used venue before Brisbane and Hayling Iceland with three discharged WM. The World Cup 1983 to be held in South Africa, were considered the venues Durban and Pietermaritzburg; for political reasons, however, came the World Cup in South Africa not materialize.
