The design of the ship was designed by architects Pierluigi Cerri and Ivana Porphyrius the Milanese architectural offices Gregotti e Associati. The ship was laid on 14 December 1988 with the hull number 5899 at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, a district of Venice, at Kiel. The launch took place on 28 November 1992. During the acceptance by the classification society RINA, the ship was measured with 53 049 GT and passed on 20 September 1993 to the owner. Conversion 2011/2012

From late October 2011 to February 2012, the Costa Romantica for about 90 million euros in the dry dock of the shipyard San Giorgio del Porto in Genoa in collaboration with the shipyard T. Mariotti SpA thoroughly renovated and expanded to include two half- decks. In this case, 111 new cabins and 120 more cabins were developed with private balconies. Numerous areas of the ship, such as the spa area ( " samsara " ), bars, theater or night club re-emerged or have been completely redesigned. The designs for the renovation came from syntax Design ( UK) and Tillberg Design (Sweden). After the renovation work, the gross tonnage increased from 53 049 to just under 57,000 GT, cabin number rose to 789 as a visible sign of the extensive modernization of the ship was then renamed in Costa neoRomantica.
