The Costa Serena is a cruise ship of Carnival Corporation & plc. It is registered at the Italian subsidiary Costa Crociere in Genoa and has been used since 2007 at the same cruise brand, especially in the Mediterranean. Her name means siren, a female mythical creatures of ancient Greek mythology, in whose style the entire ship is equipped.

The second ship of the Concordia class it is identical to the 13 January 2012 Google stricken Costa Concordia. By 2012, followed by other heavy Ster ships Costa Pacifica, Costa Favolosa and Costa Fascinosa. Together with the Costa Serena, these are the largest cruise ships that have been built so far in Italy and for a section of the Panama Canal three and a half meters wide.

History

Contract and construction

On January 4, 2005 before the completion of the Costa Concordia, Costa Crociere is Ponente, reached an agreement with Fincantieri in Sestri for 475 million euros equal nor a second ship to be constructed based on the same plans. The delivery should therefore take place in the spring of 2007, only nine months after the scheduled completion of the Costa Concordia. At the same time, a parallel event to introduce a digitized version of the ship including the cruise terminal took place in the virtual world Second Life.

Use

On May 18, started in 2007 from Savona to Venice first a seven-day vernissage cruise. The internal design of the Costa Serena in the style of Greco-Roman antiquity include almost 6000 works of art by contemporary artists and designers who are concerned with the ancient world of myth. They wanted to be the ship therefore first introduce a qualified audience. The official premiere of the Costa Serena cruise place within the context of Venice from 26 May 2007. She led the new ship over Bari, Katakolon, Piraeus, Izmir, Istanbul and Dubrovnik back to Venice.

In the following years led the cruises of the Costa Serena each of Savona and Barcelona to the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean. In winter 2010/11 the ship for a year to South America moved to seven -day cruises from Santos Brazil. After a return to the Mediterranean basin were for the winter season 2012/13 again seven-day South America cruises, but this time from Buenos Aires on the plan. Incidents

On November 1, 2013, a 82 -year-old wheelchair between Palma de Mallorca and Valencia from Deck 10 fell near Ibiza in 33.5 feet of water and died. The body was recovered on November 2, 2013.
