O'Neill Jr. Tunnel, which is why the name Dewey Square tunnel as no longer used as good will.

History

1950s

Construction of mostly elevated Central Artery called under the Boston population produced great resentment because they blocked the view and access to the historic waterfront and was otherwise little pretty to look at. The then Governor John Volpe decided therefore, the last portion of the Central Artery of the Congress Street to the limit to Chinatown in the ground to lay. At the time of opening of the Dewey Square Tunnel was the broadest vehicle tunnel in the world.

Near the north portal was a bus of Peter Pan Bus Lines, Bonanza and other regional bus lines. However, this was postponed for intermodal transport nodes Boston South Station.

Changes caused by the Big Dig

The tunnel was due to lack of hard shoulder, the small number of usable lanes as well as a vast variety of access and exit ramps notorious for considerable obstruction to a complete stop. The authorities were therefore compelled to construct the Central Artery from scratch and completely laid in the earth. The tunnel was therefore also part of the large-scale Big Dig project in the late 1990s and early 2000s. After the renovation work of the tunnel leads today only the southern direction of the Central Artery and features a new ventilation system and improved turning radius with a reasonable bank. The old north portal at the Congress Street was closed in 2005 and connected to the southern direction of the new Central Artery. On 5 March 2005 the completely renovated tunnel has six lanes at its widest point, re-opened. The Dewey Square Tunnel making it the only section still in use the original Central Artery.
