Ducati 1098

The Ducati 1098 is a motorcycle model category Superbikes of the Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati.

The 1098 was built under the responsibility of the German engineer Mario Alexander Fink and his Italian colleague Andrea Forni and was presented on 8 November 2006. It is the successor to the Ducati 999 and the predecessor of the Ducati 1198 and is thanks to its technical innovations as one of the most successful in racing motorcycles at all.

Technology

In contrast to the very modern design and this often criticized predecessor Ducati 999, the design of the 1098 with the adjacent headlamps, the single-sided swingarm and no longer integrated, double-flow exhaust system on the Ducati 998 rejects. Besides a more powerful engine performance development goals were improved handling and reduced weight by using lighter components and materials.

The V-type engine produced from 1099 cc capacity is rated at 119 kW (160 hp) and a maximum torque of 122.6 Nm.

The 1098 is equipped with the data analysis system, this allows, as in racing, the reading and analysis of data collected during the trip. It also has one, derived from the Desmosedici MotoGP replica, multi -function display that information in addition to speed and RPM among other things, about oil pressure and temperature.

Models

The bike was offered in three versions that have the same engine:

  • 1098 is equipped with a chassis Showa
  • 1098 S has an Ohlins suspension and is fitted with Marchesini forged alloy wheels
  • 1098 S Tricolore also features a 102 dB racing exhaust system by Termignoni with carbon fiber coated mufflers, a modified engine control unit and a three -tone paint

1098 R

The Ducati 1098 R was the top model in the 1098 series and the homologated for use in racing. It was produced only in small quantities and cost in Germany about 35,000 euros. She was having a dry weight of 165 kg and a curb weight ( full tank ) of 190.5 kg, the production bike with the best ratio of torque and weight, which was built to date.

In the 1098 R a 1198 cc engine is used, which is similar to the 1099- cc engine, but more than 106 mm bore and 67.9 mm stroke and machined cylinder heads features. The engine has a rated power of 132 kW (180 hp) at 9750 1/min and produces a maximum torque of 134 Nm at 7750 1/min. The bike has, unlike the other 1098 models, a slipper clutch and an optimized Öhlins suspension. For motorcycle includes a race kit consisting of a non- street-legal exhaust system and the associated engine control unit, which in a street bike traction control includes a power increase to 186 hp and for the first time. Meanwhile, Ducati has also in the "R" type designation, engine displacement following, adapted to " 1198 R "

Motorsports use

As the top versions of their predecessors also made the Ducati 1098 R is the basis of the racing machines used in the Superbike World Championship and many other Superbike Championships.

Since two-cylinder compared to four cylinders with the same capacity to develop less power without expensive and the life -shortening modifications, the technical regulations of the World Superbike Championship has been changed. This allows from 2008 for two-cylinder now a maximum of 1200 instead of 1000 cc. For this reason, the 1098 R was homologated by beginning with the 1198 cc engine.

Already in the first race in the World Superbike Championship at Losail (Qatar ) Troy Bayliss celebrated his first victory on the Ducati 1098 R Factory Team. Bayliss was then at Magny Cours on this motorcycle World Superbike champion.
