The École polytechnique de Montréal is a specialist school for mechanical engineering, which is affiliated with the University of Montreal. In winter 2011 4.390 students were enrolled for an undergraduate degree ( undergraduates ) and 1430 for a postgraduate program ( graduates ). The trade school offers 13 engineering programs, including Québec first bachelor's degree program in aviation and space technology. The faculty has 56.4 million U.S. dollars over the largest research budget in Québec. On top of an operating budget of 86 million U.S. dollars.

The École polytechnique de Montréal is committed to a sustainable, environmentally sound development and in 2011 received the first university in Montreal certification " Sustainable Campus ". For the 2005 -built, award-winning green building Pierre- Lassonde and Claudette Mackay - Lassonde - the École polytechnique was the first university in Canada to receive a LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

In 1989, the school shooting occurred at the Polytechnic University of Montréal.
