Edward Arnold (actor)

Gunther Edward Arnold Schneider ( born February 18, 1890 in New York City; † April 26, 1956 in Encino, California ) was an American actor.

Life

Edward Arnold was born in New York City, the son of German immigrants. At the age of twelve he was on stage for the first time. His professional debut was in 1907 on the side of Ethel Barrymore. His film debut was in 1916 in The Misleading Lady on the side of Henry B. Walthall. Until 1919 he appeared in numerous silent films up, then went back to the stage and only returned in 1932 for the film back. Arnold played in almost 150 feature films, but he is known primarily for his major supporting roles in the films of Frank Capra. From 1940 to 1942 he was president of the Screen Actors Guild.
