In the Middle Ages both places were inhabited; Castelmaure had a small church. Until the signing of the peace Pyrenees (1659 ) Castelmaure was near the border of France to Roussillon, which belonged for many years to Aragon or to Spain. The two formerly independent villages have been merged in the time of the French Revolution to a community.
