Engelhartszell an der Donau

Engelhart Zell an der Donau is an Austrian market town in the district in Schärding Innviertel in Upper Austria with 972 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013).

Angel is known for Hartzell find there also Trappistenstift Engelszell. The municipality is located in the judicial district Schärding.

Geography

Engelhart Zell an der Donau is located in the Upper Danube Valley at 302 m altitude in Innviertel. The expansion is 9.2 kilometers from north to south, from west to east 7.4 km. The total area is 18.8 km ². 57.4 % of the area is forested, 28.2% of the area is used for agriculture.

The main town of the municipality Engelhartszell on the Danube is Engelhartszell.

History

The traces of settlement in the region date back to Roman times. In the Antonine Itinerary, a Roman street directory from the 2nd century AD, the city is mentioned as a station Stanacum. 1840 Roman ruins were in the district Oberranna from Schlögener dig club at the inn Wagner discovered. The - probably originating from the middle imperial period - building was right on the limit (now the Nibelungenstraße ). Its function as a fastening is still controversial, possibly acting at the Baur Estonians to a greater or Burgus but also to parts of a thermal facility. Engelhart cell was first mentioned in 1194. The lying near the village Engelszell with its rococo church was Bishop Bernhard ( Wernhart ) of Prambach, originally founded in 1293 as a Cistercian monastery. 1786 Engelszell was abolished by Emperor Joseph II, since 1926 it is the only Trappist monastery in Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on 13 March 1938, the village belonged to the Upper Danube. After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria. In 1956, the Danube river power plant Jochenstein was in the municipal area, about one kilometer north- west of the town, built.

In 1991 the municipality had 1,160 inhabitants according to the census, 2001, then 1172 inhabitants.

Blazon: In red is a golden, bent- tip, with black roman capital letters E; in the upper corners of each a silver, sechsstrahliger star. The municipality colors are red -yellow-red.

Culture and sights

  • Engelszell: The pin was founded in 1293 as a Cistercian monastery. Today it is the only Trappist monastery in Austria.
  • Market Church of the Assumption: late Gothic church choir in 1459, the nave in 1503; 1509 Consecration Bishop of Passau, Urban. In the 18th century in Baroque style. On the outer walls preserved old grave stones.
  • Imperial toll house: late Gothic building with a vaulted cellar from the 15th century. The building was located at that time on the border of the former Empire and served the border crossing the Danube vessels. Today: Use as Kulturkeller for exhibitions and musical performances
  • Romans Castell Stanacum: remains of a Roman Castells ( part of the Roman Limes ) with four round towers in the district Oberranna.
  • Plague: built in 1510
