Geographical location

Engelberg is the northernmost municipality in the district of Traunstein. It consists of 99 villages which are connected to 92 km local roads.

History

The old Bavarian noble family of Tunz ( Tuntz ) of Tunzenberg had their headquarters in the town were you when ducal magistrates and judges detectable to the 14th century. Also the monastery tree castle until the secularization in 1803 extensive tithe ownership in Engelberg. Engelberg belonged to Rentamt Burghausen and the district court Trostberg of the Electorate of Bavaria. Created in 1818 by the municipality edict in Bavaria, the current community. From 1539 the Salzburg canon Eberhard von Hirnheim officiated here as pastor. In 1547 he became pastor in Thalgau, 1552 he was elected Prince Bishop of Eichstätt.

Incorporations

On 1 July 1972, the formerly independent communities Eiting and corn mountain were incorporated ( from the district Mühldorf both).
