Erkerode

Erkerode is a place and a municipality in the district Wolfenbüttel in Lower Saxony. It lies on the western edge of the ridge Elm and about 17 kilometers south-east of Brunswick. East of the village begins around 3 km long Reitlingstal, leading into the Elm.

Geographical Location

Erkerode is located in the southeast of the city of Braunschweig and belongs to the district of Wolfenbüttel. The place is located in the western part of the Elm Lappwald, on the western Elmrand. The honeycomb occurs here from the Reitlingstal over into the foothills. Erkerode is the capital of the municipality Erkerode. The nearest middle centers are Helmstedt, Konigslutter and Wolfenbüttel.

Community structure

The municipality consists of the villages Erkerode Erkerode ( 652 inhabitants) and Lucklum (362 inhabitants), the latter being a former medieval of the Teutonic Knights. Previously Erkerode belonged to the district of Braunschweig, after which the place or the community was part of the district of Wolfenbüttel. Erkerode belongs to Samtgemeinde Sickte and projects with its 13.34 square kilometers far into the ridge Elm. There also is the north-eastern area of the velvet municipality Sickte.

Geology

Erkerode located on the edge of the Elms, a mountain range whose emergence in the Triassic began about 200 million years ago. In a previous sea, the geologically -called Germanic Basin, lived marine animals that Terebratel. When they died, they formed a layer of lime and originated from this layer by compression of Elmkalkstein. The seabed arched over a period of 100 million years ago, caused by a 900 m thick salt deposits, to Elm on. The salt rock, which is lighter than the overlying limestone, pressed the Elm upwards.

The rocks in the Elm are limestones and were formerly broken the so-called West sticks of Erkerode. It is a special limestone, the bay or Trochitenkalk, which originated in the Upper Muschelkalk in the Trochitenkalk lineup. This limestone is locally restricted to the vicinity of Erkerode. It was created from deposits of dead sea lilies in the warm shallow water moving sea. Sea lilies ( crinoids ) are a type of Encrinus liliiformis and are not plants. There were animals that fed on plankton. These animals were fixed to a handle at the seabed and carrying at the upper end a cup-shaped body with arms. The fossilized crinoid are wheel-shaped and are called Trochiten. The crinoids were so heaped in front of the sea, that they piled on rock layer after its death itself. The church walls and numerous stone house base are made of this natural stone in Erkerode.

History

1175 the place Erkerode was first mentioned as Erikeroth. The village had a long time to aristocratic court Destedt and was since the 12th century in the possession of those of Veltheim. Coat of arms

In 1985, the municipality Erkerode a coat of arms. It shows a heraldic ammonites in right field, which refers to the former limestone quarries on the edge of the Elms (such as the " West sticks ").
