History

After the historical place Castelo Rodrigo had declined in importance, especially through the destruction suffered in 1762 during the Seven Years' War, and in 1810 during the Napoleonic invasions, to whose inhabitants Figueira settled largely in neighboring S.Vicente then on. 1836 S.Vicente was an independent circuit, where the circuit at the same time resolution has been assigned to Castelo Rodrigo. The name was changed to Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, to take account of the formative history of Castelo Rodrigo.

Culture and sights

The village as a whole is a listed building. Its monuments include various historic public buildings, fountains and religious buildings, including built as recently as the mid-20th century Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição

With Castelo Rodrigo is situated in the district of one of the twelve historic villages, aldeias Históricas de Portugal. Marked hiking trails connect the villages.

In the museum, Museu da Casa de Freguesia de Escalhão, in the municipality Escalhão, the traditions of the region are shown in two tours. On the one hand shows the tour of the kitchen ( Portuguese: Percurso à cozinha ) living in the house, on the other hand, the tour Artes e Ofícios (German: arts and crafts ) and others the production of olive oil, the regional viticulture and the previous agricultural activities before.
