Forel ( Lavaux) is a municipality in the district of Lavaux -Oron in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Forel (Lavaux ) lies at 716 m above sea level. M., 11 km east of the canton capital Lausanne ( straight line ). The scattered settlement community extends to the south-east adjoining the Jorat plateau, north of the Lake Geneva basin, in the Vaud Mittelland.

History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1274 under the name of Fores; since 1300 the present name has been handed down. The place name comes from the late Latin forestum back, it means forest and was usually reserved in the Middle Ages as a hunting ground for noble families. Also located outside a closed resort hamlets and farms were called in Old French forest.

The once densely forested area of Forel ( Lavaux) was cleared in the 12th century by the monks of the Cistercian abbey skin - Cret and reclaimed. In the following years the area between the Counts of Savoy and the Bishop of Lausanne was disputed until the latter Forel in 1300 brought by purchase in itself.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Lausanne. After the collapse of the ancien régime Forel ( Lavaux) belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the district of Lavaux. Forel belonged until 1824 to the parish of Villette and was also called Les Monts de Villette. With the separation of Villette Forel ( Lavaux) became an independent municipality with the community center in Cornes de Cerf.

Attractions

The Church in Cornes de Cerf was built in 1869 and still belongs to the parish of Savigny. A beautiful panoramic view of the Lake Geneva area, the Alps and the Jura offers from the observation tower Tour de Gourze on the 925 m high Mont de Gourze.
