Franklin is a city (city ) in Johnson County in the U.S. state of Indiana. In 2000, Franklin, the county seat of Johnson County is at the same time, 19.463 inhabitants. The city is named after Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States, named.

Geography

Franklin is centrally located in Indiana. The city is located about 32 miles from Indianapolis. According to United States Census Bureau, the total area of 29.2 km ² land area.

History

In 1823, the first settlers of Kentucky Coming settled. A year later, the courthouse, the District Court today, was built. The Franklin College, founded in 1834 was the first higher education institution in Indiana, which allowed women to study.

Demography

The census in 2000 revealed a number of 19.463 people, 6,824 households, and 4,872 families living in the city. The population density was 666.5 per km ². There were 7,432 housing units at an average density of 254.8 per km ². Here lived 96.7 % White, 1.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.51 % Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.59 % from other races, and 0.81% two or more races. Latin Americans had a share of 1.31 % of the population.

The age distribution was as follows: 26.0% were under 18, 11.5% from 18 to 24, 29.9% were between 25 and 44, 16.8% were between 45 and 64 and 15.8 % were 65 years or older. The median age was 33 years.
