Speedway is a town in Marion County, Indiana, in the United States. It is completely surrounded by the city of Indianapolis and is the city where the world famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Speedway has after the last population census in 2000 a population of 12,881.

History

The city was founded in 1926 and was intended as a " city of the future ". It should be built as a city that is car friendly and the existed at a time when even almost all the roads in the neighboring Indianapolis brick. Over eighty years after the founding of the city of Indianapolis Motor Speedway is one of the most important sports venues in the world.

Demography

In the last population census in 2000, the city had 12,881 inhabitants, 6,151 households. 3,278 families living in the city. The population density was 1.047/km ². Of the 6,151 households, 24.5% had children under the age of 18. 36.6 % of households were married couples, 12.5 % living alone or single mothers. 46.7 % of persons living in households were not married and had no children. The average household size was 2.08 persons and the average family size 2.78 persons.

Around a fifth of the population was under 18 years old, 10.1 % from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44 and 20.2% between 45 and 64 years old. 17.2% of residents were already 65 or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females 89.2 males.

The average income of households was 37 713 U.S. dollars, and the median income for a family 49 005 U.S. dollars.
