Fred Stanfield

Frederic William Stanfield ( born May 4, 1944 in Toronto, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player and coach. In his career spanning 15 seasons he played for the Chicago Black Hawks, Boston Bruins, Minnesota North Stars and the Buffalo Sabres in the National Hockey League for the position of left winger. With the Boston Bruins winning the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972. His two brothers Jack and Jim were also active in the NHL.

Career

Fred Stanfield began his career in 1961 with the St. Catharines Teepees, which a year later renamed in St. Catharines Black Hawks, after the team was bought by financial problems from the National Hockey League franchise, the Chicago Blackhawks. Overall Stanfield graduated three seasons for the Teepees / Blackhawks in the Ontario Hockey Association, before he made his debut at the start of the NHL season 1964/65 for the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League.

On May 15, 1967 Stanfield was transferred by the Blackhawks along with Phil Esposito and Ken Hodge to the Boston Bruins, Chicago received in return the player Gilles Marotte, Pit Martin and Jack Norris. For the Bruins this business proved very profitable, Esposito formed along with Bobby Orr a very offensively strong team. The Boston Bruins have advanced to one of the strongest teams in the NHL, and for the seasons 1969/70 and 1971/72 won Fred Stanfield and his new team to the Stanley Cup. After 50 games in the AHL, he finished his playing career and took over for the rest of the AHL 1978/79 season as coach of Chuck Hamilton. The Hershey Bears eliminated in the first play-off round against the Binghamton Dusters and Stanfield left the club after this season. 1979/80 he was active in the short term as head coach of the Niagara Falls Flyers of the Ontario Hockey Association.
